PLB (Personal locator beacon)

Personal Locator Beacon

A Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) is a transmitter that sends distress signals to search and rescue services. A PLB can help ensure that persons in distress are located more quickly. A PLB must always be registered.

Please note that a PLB that is to be used on board a ship must be registered with the ship's MMSI number, which is issued by Telecommunications Authority of Greenland. By coding a PLB with an MMSI number, a PLB status changes to an EPIRB (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon) used by ships as emergency transmitters. Hereby, the transmitter is registered as belonging to the ship, and the rescue authorities thus have the opportunity to identify who is sending the emergency signal.
